Talking about the past (Perfekt)

Pattern Subject + hunn / sinn (position 2) + … + past participle (end).

Gëschter sinn ech an de Restaurant gaangen an hunn eng Pizza giess. Yesterday I went to the restaurant and ate a pizza.

Same bracket as the modal verbs. Most verbs use hunn. Verbs of movement or change use sinn.

InfinitivePastExample

drénkenhunn … gedronkEch hunn e Kaffi gedronk.
schaffenhunn … geschafftEch hu gëschter geschafft.
kafenhunn … kafEch hu Brout kaf.
goensinn … gaangenEch sinn an de Restaurant gaangen.

Ech hu gëschter, ech hu Brout: the n-rule again, before g and b. Use war (was) and hat (had) directly:

sinn → war (was)hunn → hat (had)

hien / hatt / siwarhat
mirwarenhaten
dir / Dirwaarthat
si (they)warenhaten
hunn or sinn?

Most verbs use hunn. Use sinn for movement from one place to another (goen, fueren, kommen, reesen, lafen), for a change of state (opstoen), and with bleiwen and sinn itself.

No ge- for some verbs

Verbs ending in -éieren take no ge-: studéieren → studéiert. Nor do verbs starting with er-: erwächen → erwächt. In separable verbs ge- goes after the prefix: opstoen → opgestan.

Word order and the n-rule

hunn / sinn stay in position 2, the participle goes to the end: Gëschter hunn ech Tëlee gekuckt. The n-rule works here too: ech hu gekacht, mir si gefuer — but ech hunn eng Pizza giess, ech sinn doheem bliwwen.

Final goal sentence

Gëschter sinn ech mat menger Famill an de Restaurant gaangen, well mir Honger haten. Ech hunn eng Pizza giess an e Glas Waasser gedronk.
