+ a place: where to and where

Pattern Subject + Verb + (time) + place.

Ech ginn an de Restaurant. I'm going to the restaurant.

Two different meanings, two different forms:

Movement (where to?)Location (where?)
Ech ginn an de Restaurant.Ech iessen am Restaurant.
Ech ginn op d'Aarbecht.Ech sinn op der Aarbecht.
Ech fueren op Lëtzebuerg.Ech wunnen zu Déifferdeng.
Ech ginn heem.Ech sinn doheem.
Why “op d'Aarbecht” but “op der Aarbecht”?

It depends on movement or location. ginn = going somewhere (where to?) takes the accusative: op d'Aarbecht. sinn = being somewhere (where?) takes the dative, and feminine d' becomes der. Masculine de becomes dem, and an + dem = am.

Same in German

in die Stadt (movement, accusative) but in der Stadt (location, dative).

Word order with several pieces

Time → Manner → Place: Ech ginn haut mam Bus an de Restaurant.

mam = mat + dem

mam means “with the”. For transport it means “by”: mam Bus = by bus. mat always takes the dative: masculine and neuter dem merge with it into mam; feminine stays as two words, mat der.

French interference

French uses au restaurant for both “to” and “at”. Luxembourgish separates them: an de Restaurant (going) vs am Restaurant (being there).

Practice

Say where you go and where you are at 5 times of the day.
